Philadelphia Phillies sign experienced player to replace injured players

Despite the fact that the transfer market is already closed, the Philadelphia Phillies are not stopping in their search for reinforcements. The club has added a new arm to its organization by signing veteran pitcher Lou Trivino to a minor league deal. The news, confirmed by a source to The Athletic, comes at a time when the Phillies are looking to strengthen their pitching depth ahead of the final stretch of the season and postseason aspirations.

Taking into account injuries and rotations, the addition of a reliever with Major League experience ensures a backup option that could be crucial if new unforeseen events affect the team in its playoff run.

An experienced player

The 33-year-old brings with him considerable Major League experience. The right-handed reliever is best known for his time with the Oakland Athletics, where he played from 2018 to 2021. He was later traded to the New York Yankees in 2022. At the start of the 2023 season, his career suffered a setback when he underwent Tommy John surgery for an elbow injury, which kept him out of action for two full years.

“The Phillies have signed right-handed reliever Lou Trivino to a minor league deal,” a source told The Athletic. “He is a Montco native who went to Slippery Rock. He pitched for the Giants and Dodgers earlier this season,” he added.

The Phillies’ strategy

The signing of Trivino is a strategic move by the Phillies, who are looking to cover possible gaps in their pitching rotation. With Aaron Nola currently on the injured list with a rib cage injury and a tight schedule ahead, the club needs backup options.

While Trivino will initially join the minor league system, his goal is clear: to be a ready alternative if the starting rotation, consisting of Zack Wheeler, Jesus Luzardo, Cristopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez and Taijuan Walker, suffers further injuries or a drop in performance. This move demonstrates the team’s commitment to keeping its roster as strong as possible in the title fight.
