Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke on the controversy his defensive tackle Jalen Carter is involved. While facing the Dallas Cowboys on Week 1, Carter was ejected from the game for spitting on Cowboys’s quarterback Dak Prescott during playing time.

Ignoring the highly publicized argument in order to choose his team for the next game, Sirianni did not bench Carter for the next game against the Kansas City Chiefs of Patrick Mahomes.

The incident

In the Week 1 matchup, Carter’s act occurred just six seconds into the game, resulting in an immediate ejection. The NFL fined him $57,222 for his behavior, and also gave him an one-game suspension. He did not appeal the decision and instead focused on preparing for his return.

Speaking ahead of the Eagles’ matchup with the Chiefs, Sirianni emphasized both accountability and player development in his philosophy.

Jalen has shown genuine remorse and understands the gravity of his actions. We believe in his character and his ability to learn from this mistake

Nick Sirianni

The coach added that his choice was not condoning the act but finding discipline and trust in the developing of a player instead.

Carter’s awaited return to the field

Carter played again against the Kansas City Chiefs and contributed with his solid presence to the defense, making multiple tackles and helping his team to achieve the victory by a score of 24-20. His performance was a clear example of his determination and the confidence the team has in his ability to recover from the setbacks.

The Eagles franchise wants to be focused on spreading a team culture that keeps in mind that actions of misconduct will always have a consequence. Sirianni reiterated the fact that Carter’s behaviour was not appropriate, the team is all about developing as a person and a professional football player.

We are committed to helping our players learn from their mistakes while contributing to the team in a positive way

Nick Sirianni

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to a great start in the 2025 NFL season, collecting a 2-0 record after victories over the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. Looking ahead, the team faces multiple important challenges and opportunities as they desire to build a team according to their expected success.
