Peyton Manning’s last goodbye: The emotional message to his former boss Jim Irsay

Jim Irsay, the longtime owner of the Indianapolis Colts, has died at the age of 65, the team announced on Wednesday. Irsay was a transformative figure in the NFL, guiding the Colts through some of their most successful years, including a Super Bowl victory in 2006. His influence extended beyond football, as he was known for his philanthropy, passion for music, and unwavering commitment to the city of Indianapolis.

Irsay took over ownership of the Colts in 1997, following the passing of his father, Robert Irsay. One of the most defining moments of his tenure came in 1998, when the Colts selected Peyton Manning with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. Manning would go on to win four MVP awards and lead the Colts to two Super Bowl appearances, solidifying the team’s reputation as an NFL powerhouse during the early 2000s.

Upon hearing of Irsay’s passing, Manning released a heartfelt statement on Instagram, expressing his deep gratitude for the owner who gave him his start in the league. “His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched,” Manning wrote. “His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten.” Manning was later released by Irsay in 2011 after undergoing three neck surgeries, marking the end of an era in Indianapolis. However, the two remained close, and Manning has often credited Irsay for believing in him when he was a young quarterback.

A sad day for everyone

Beyond football, Irsay was widely recognized for his contributions to charitable causes and his advocacy for mental health awareness. He was also a well-known collector of rock memorabilia, with a deep appreciation for music icons like The Beatles and Bob Dylan. His eccentric and outspoken personality made him one of the most unique owners in the NFL, respected by players, coaches, and fellow executives alike.

As the Colts mourn the loss of their beloved owner, the future of the franchise now falls to his daughters, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson, who are expected to continue his legacy. Under their leadership, the Colts will look to uphold the traditions and standards that Irsay established over decades at the helm.

Though Jim Irsay’s presence will be deeply missed, his impact on the game and the city of Indianapolis will endure. His passion for football, his generosity, and his unwavering loyalty to his team will remain an integral part of the Colts’ history for years to come.
