Petra Kvitová, the two-time Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic, has announced that she will retire from professional tennis after the 2025 US Open.

The 35-year-old tennis star, who has enjoyed a glittering career spanning nearly two decades, made the announcement on June 18, 2025, through a heartfelt message on social media. Her decision to retire comes after a stellar career, with numerous accolades that have made her one of the most respected figures in the sport.

Kvitová’s career is filled with remarkable achievements, but none more iconic than her two Wimbledon titles in 2011 and 2014.

Her powerful game and aggressive playing style earned her a career-high world No. 2 ranking and helped her secure a host of titles over the years. In addition to her Wimbledon triumphs, Kvitová also represented the Czech Republic in the Billie Jean King Cup, securing six victories for her country. She further cemented her legacy by claiming a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Despite experiencing a major setback in her career after a life-threatening knife attack in 2016, Kvitová fought back with incredible resilience, making a triumphant return to the court. Her comeback not only showcased her fighting spirit but also her deep passion for the game.

As she heads toward retirement, Kvitová has expressed that she is content with her career and is looking forward to concluding her journey at the prestigious US Open.

Returning to the court after maternity leave

Kvitová’s announcement to retire follows her recent return to tennis after a 15-month maternity break. In July 2024, she gave birth to her son, Petr, and later confirmed her intention to make a comeback to professional tennis in early 2025.

She returned to the WTA Tour in February, competing at events like the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, and the prestigious tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.

However, her return has been challenging. She has struggled with a 1-7 win-loss record and has been forced to withdraw from two events due to injury. Despite these difficulties,

Kvitová has remained positive, emphasizing that her return to tennis was not driven by a need for immediate success but by her love for the game. She is determined to play with joy, acknowledging that while the results may not always go as planned, the experience of competing is enough to bring her fulfillment.

Kvitová’s journey back to the court, though not without its hurdles, has been inspiring. Her resilience and dedication to the sport serve as a testament to her passion and love for tennis. As she prepares for her final tournament at the US Open, she remains grateful for the support of her family, coaches, and fans throughout her illustrious career.

With her retirement on the horizon, Petra Kvitová will leave a lasting legacy in the world of tennis. Her achievements and resilience both on and off the court will continue to inspire the next generation of athletes for years to come.
