Pete Alonso will not be the only ‘victim’ of the Mets’ disaster: another player on the way out

The Mets‘ collapse in 2025 is a disaster that will reportedly ensure next year’s team is not the same as this season’s, putting several key figures on the exit ramp. While the future of Pete Alonso is making headlines, Edwin Diaz also faces a complex contractual situation that makes him another potential “victim” of the team’s disappointment.

The complex outlook for Edwin Diaz

Diaz’s situation is more complex, as he is coming off a wonderful season with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves. If he chooses to stay, he would have two years and $37 million left on his contract, plus a club option for 2028 worth $17.25 million.

However, the pitcher has the possibility to test the free agent market or renegotiate a new deal with the Mets. It is worth remembering that the team had already negotiated a five-year, $102 million contract with Diaz in November 2022 to prevent him from reaching free agency.

Diaz’s calmness and Alonso’s disappointment

The disaster of the season has left a bitter taste among the players. For example, Francisco Lindor summed up the feeling: “That’s part of the reason why this sucks. Because no matter what happens, the team is going to be different. There’s a lot of good guys here.”

Diaz indicated that he will return home to Puerto Rico to discuss his future with his family. Despite the contractual uncertainty, the pitcher expressed his appreciation for the franchise and left the door open for his return.
