Pete Alonso refuses to say this is his last game with the Mets at Citi Field

“If I had a penny for how many times everybody has said that, I’d be really, really rich. I’m a firm believer that the right thing is going to happen. You can’t necessarily control fate, you can’t control the ‘what ifs’… But this place has been really special to me.”, Pete Alonso.

Mets face tough decision on star first baseman

The New York Mets’ front office will face a tough decision about their star first baseman. Pete Alonso notably turned down a seven-year, $158 million contract extension in 2023 from then-New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler.

On February 12, 2025, the New York Mets and Pete Alonso agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract that included an opt-out after the first year. Pete Alonso earned $30 million in the first year and will receive $24 million in 2026 if he does not exercise the opt-out

But it is likely that Pete Alonso will exercise the opt-out, which will force David Stearns to decide if he wants to pay the first baseman. It would not be a surprise if the New York Mets let Pete Alonso go.

Pete Alonso is a New York Mets legend and has earned the city’s affection with his play, strong leadership and charisma. If both sides can make the money work, the Polar Bear will no doubt be thrilled at the opportunity to finish his playing career in Queens, as will the fans.
