The positions between the New York Mets and Pete Alonso seem to be moving further apart for a possible return to Queens, partly because of the terms of the length of the contract and also because there is a big difference between what billionaire Steve Cohen‘s team is offering and what the first baseman wants.
Alonso’s agent is Scott Boras, the same as Juan Soto, which puts the negotiations at a high point, especially because of the $765 million for 15 years that they obtained for the Dominican’s signature and now Dan Bartels, analyst for the NY Post, revealed the amount that separates them.
“The Mets offered Pete Alonso a 3-year, $90 million contract, but the player is looking for around $175 million to $200 million,” Bartels posted on his X account.
Pete Alonso has new suitors
The spaces among the most sought-after in free agency are gradually being filled as 2024 comes to an end. After Corbin Burnes‘ deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, among the pitchers, the object of desire is Japanese Roki Sasaki, followed by Jack Flaherty
Among the field players, the Top 3 is made up of third baseman Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros, first baseman Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, and center fielder Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles
This is why Alonso knows that despite his desire to stay with the Mets, he is in a position to seek a better contract and has let himself be courted by other proposals and one of them came from the San Francisco Giants, who after losing the bid to incorporate Burnes into their rotation, had budget left over and this was reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
“The Giants also remain on the hunt for a first baseman or designated hitter, and four-time All-Star Pete Alonso, who has hit 226 home runs in six seasons with the Mets, is on their radar,” Slusser wrote.
However, the Giants would not be the only alternative for Alonso, as on Saturday, Jon Heynman of MLB Network reported that the Toronto Blue Jays joined the list of interested teams, who also have their sights set on Anthony Santander
“At this point, I think Blue Jays fans would be happy with either one,” Heyman said.
