Less than two weeks after shocking the market by signing with the Baltimore Orioles, Pete Alonso broke his silence on his departure from New York. The player, who left an indelible mark in Queens, said on the “Foul Territory” show that he feels at peace with his decision and excited about his new destination.

The soap opera about Pete Alonso’s future seemed to be endless, however, the player chose to join the Orioles and embark on a new path in his sporting and personal life. Alonso is happy with the decision he made, but also took the opportunity to explain certain details that were left up in the air.

The end of an era for Pete Alonso

Despite being the Mets’ all-time home run leader, Alonso revealed that the lack of a concrete proposal from the New York front office was the determining factor in seeking new horizons. According to the player, the situation became clear when negotiations simply did not progress.

“It was basically when we got to the actual point of negotiation. It’s like, all right, it’s just not going to happen,” Alonso explained of the moment he understood his time with the Mets was over.

For my part, I gave everything I had and I always do. I don’t take it personally because, at the end of the day, it’s their philosophy, it’s their business decision.

Alonso also reflected on the Mets’ turbulent 2025 season, noting that the team’s collapse and constant injuries to pitchers prevented the club from reaching the postseason, which may have influenced the direction the front office took.

Pete Alonso explains why he chose the Baltimore Orioles

While David Stearns and the Mets maintained a cautious stance, the Baltimore Orioles stepped up their interest during the general managers’ meetings. Alonso highlighted the team’s young talent and the beauty of Camden Yards as key points in accepting the five-year, $155 million contract.

“I feel like I’m in the right place. We, as a family, are in the right place. The Orioles treated us excellently all the way… I just feel blessed,” Alonso explained.

When asked directly if he felt resentment towards the Mets organization for not fighting harder to keep him, Alonso was blunt: “How could I be resentful about that?” concluding that he leaves with his head held high after having given everything for the New York fans.
