Pete Alonso feels ‘great’ about Mets’ position, even with Phillies dominating NL East

Despite the 1-0 loss to the Phillies that leaves them eight games off the top of the National League East, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso remains calm and optimistic about his team’s postseason chances. With only 18 games remaining in the regular season, overcoming that difference to win the division title seems almost impossible.

A new target?

For Alonso, the real goal is to secure a playoff spot, whether as a division champion or through a wild-card berth.

“I feel great. If the season ended today, we’d have a chance to roll the dice in the playoffs,” Alonso told MLB.com, emphasizing that in MLB’s postseason, where you start doesn’t always determine the outcome. Last year, the Mets proved that this mentality works, making the playoffs as a wild card and taking the Los Angeles Dodgers to the limit in the Championship Series.

Alonso firmly believes in the team’s talent, despite the fact that they have not played at their best. He recognizes that the Mets’ potential is “very high” and that the talent in the locker room is “undeniable”. With the wild-card race tight, the Mets’ focus now is on winning enough games to keep the San Francisco Giants at bay and secure their place in the postseason.

Pete Alonso’s numbers

With the 2025 season coming to an end, Pete Alonso has proven to be a key piece for the Mets. With 33 home runs and 113 RBIs, he has remained among the National League leaders in both categories.

In addition to his power, Alonso has shown a remarkable improvement in his discipline at the plate, reducing his strikeout rate to the lowest of his career. His .269 batting average and .865 OPS reflect a solid and consistent season in which he has combined strength and skill and keeps him optimistic about achieving his goals with the Mets.
