Pete Alonso emerges as a key trade piece for the New York Mets

The 2025 MLB season is in full swing, and the race for the World Series-the ultimate prize-is heating up. Among the top contenders, the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets are determined to prove they have what it takes to go all the way.

Both teams are striving for success, but behind the scenes lies a story of past mistakes and roster-building decisions. Pete Alonso has become a central figure in a potential trade to correct a costly error the Mets made back in 2021.

The costly 2021 decision that hurt the Mets’ momentum

Javier Báez arrived at the Mets as a two-time All-Star and 2020 Gold Glove winner. For the Puerto Rican infielder, it was a dream come true to join New York. The deal was straightforward: Báez to the Mets, and Pete Crow-Armstrong to the Cubs.

At first glance, the trade seemed balanced, with both players performing well that season. However, things quickly turned sour for the Mets. Báez struggled to meet expectations, appearing in just 47 games before leaving the franchise after one season.

Meanwhile, Crow-Armstrong has become one of the Cubs’ most promising stars. Known for his elite defense and consistency in center field, he’s now seen as a cornerstone of the Chicago roster, further highlighting how one-sided the trade turned out to be.

Pete Alonso’s role in the Mets’ next big deal

The New York Mets wants again in their roster the abilities and skills of Pete Crow Amstrong, and according to SNY’ Andy Martino, the Mets are trying to fix their mistake of 2021, letting Amstrong leave the team.

Martino said that there could be an option in which the team New York team will propose a Pete Alonso for Pete Crow Amstrong swap. “Of what they were doing as an organization, they owed it to themselves to at least take calls on Pete and see if anyone would offer something they couldn’t pass up,” said Martino.

He also added the conversations that are holding both teams, “They didn’t get close to anything, but in the Mets’ office, they hatched an idea that was like ‘Let’s just see.’ So they called the Cubs and said, ‘What about Pete Crow Armstrong for Pete Alonso? Send him back our way.’ Because the Cubs liked Alonso. And obviously, that’s a very short conversation.”

This potential move could shake up the market, as the New York Mets are reportedly interested in bringing back their former star. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs have long shown interest in Pete Alonso, and his profile could be a strong fit within their current roster strategy. A deal of this magnitude could benefit both teams and reshape their trajectories heading into the future.
