In which pitching department did Paul Skenes rank as the second best since 1920?

Paul Skenes has the second-lowest ERA through 50 career starts in Major League Baseball since 1920, after on Sunday, August 24, 2025, he pitched seven scoreless innings where he struck out seven and only gave up three hits in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ four-run shutout of the Colorado Rockies.

What did Paul Skenes say about his record?

“I just have to do it in the next 50, and in the 50 after that. Consistency is the most important thing, I think. Being on the field, doing the same thing every day. That’s all you can ask of the players. I’ve been pretty consistent up to this point. I just have to keep it up,” Paul Skenes.

Which pitcher has a better ERA than Paul Skenes?

According to MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf, only Vida Blue had a better ERA in his first 50 career starts since the beginning of MLB’s live-ball era in 1920. Blue pitched his first 50 starts for the Oakland Athletics from 1969 to 1972 and had a 2.01 ERA.

Paul Skenes has been brilliant this season with a league-best 2.07 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 181 strikeouts in 161 innings in his 27 starts with a record of eight wins and nine losses, which has not prevented him from making history so far in MLB.
