NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce has broken his silence following his arrest earlier this week, chalking up the bizarre incident-where he was found asleep at the wheel on a Los Angeles freeway-to simply being “old” and “tired.”
In a statement posted to the social media platform Threads on Thursday, the Boston Celtics legend claimed he dozed off after being stuck in a massive traffic jam for nearly an hour.
“Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep,” Pierce wrote, attaching a photo showing rows of cars with their brake lights on. “I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep. I’m good, y’all, thanks for the love.”
The “detail” that Pierce did not adress
However, Pierce’s explanation completely sidestepped the most serious part of the encounter. He made no mention of the fact that the California Highway Patrol arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
The incident occurred late Tuesday night when CHP officers discovered the 2008 NBA champion asleep behind the wheel of his Range Rover, which was stopped in the middle of U.S. Highway 101. He was subsequently taken into custody.
It remains unclear if Pierce will face criminal charges, as the CHP is now presenting the case to the L.A. City Attorney’s Office for review. For now, the arrest marks another troubling chapter in the Hall of Famer’s post-retirement life.
