Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick are two of the best head coaches in NFL history. Despite their contrasting styles and divergent paths, Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones said the two coaches are more alike than everyone thinks.
Belichick and Carroll have never worked together. Belichick is a pupil of the legendary Bill Parcells, while Carroll is part of the George Seifert coaching tree. What’s more, Belichick just embarked on a new adventure with the NCAA’s North Carolina Tar Heels, while Carroll just took over the reins of the Raiders in the NFL.
Perhaps their only commonality is their successful careers, Carroll has won a Super Bowl, while Belichick can boast six championship rings as a head coach. According to Jones, that’s something they both share: their winning spirit.
They’re the best, Jones said
Jack Jones is a fourth-year cornerback who came to the NFL in 2022 as a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots. In 2023, the Pats waived Jones, who landed with the Raiders. That is, the young cornerback began his career under Belichick and will now play with Carroll in Las Vegas.
In a recent chat on Good Morning Football, Jones admitted that it’s amazing to be able to play for both coaches. “You know, I played for Coach Bill and I played for Pete Carroll. It’s like two of the best head coaches in the game. So, I mean, man, I’m blessed.”
Jones, a California native, grew up watching Carroll coach the USC Trojans. “I grew up in the LA area, so I always watch USC and UCLA and that football coming up and playing for Pete Carroll is going to be kind of like a dream come true. As if somebady was playing for Bill Belichick today.”
Carroll will try to lift the Raiders
Las Vegas was one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2024. Its 4-13 record was barely enough for fourth place in the AFC West and 28th overall. The Raiders’ poor season cost head coach Antonio Pierce his job, paving the way for Carroll’s arrival.
As a Super Bowl XLVIII champion with the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll will be responsible for lifting the team. The task will not be easy, but with the coach’s talent and players like Jones, the team has already taken an important first step.
