Patrick Mahomes would have to play into his 40s to match the records of The GOAT Tom Brady

Patrick Mahomes has had nothing but success since being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Andy Reid and his coaching staff have carved out a perfect system to get the most out of the gunslinger, who has played with other big names like Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.

As a result of Mahomes’ success, fans and pundits regularly compare him to Tom Brady, who is widely viewed as the greatest quarterback in NFL history. However, even Patrick himself has been slow to accept the comparisons.

“Tom’s skewed people’s brains on how hard that is to do because of how well he took care of his body,” Mahomes told TIME in 2023.

“I’ve looked, if I played until Tom [Brady]’s age, my daughter would be 19 [or] 20 years old. I would love to play that long. At the same time, I want to be there for my daughter. If I can do that, I’ll continue to play. But if I feel like it’s taking away from my family time, that’s when I’ll know it’s time to go.”

When it comes to some of the records that Brady has set, here’s a look at how much longer Mahomes would have to maintain his level of play in order to break them.

Career passing touchdowns

Back in 2018, when Mahomes was named the Most Valuable Player of the Year, he threw a career-high 50 passing touchdowns in what was his first season as a starter.

While he hasn’t come close to that since, Mahomes has found the endzone consistently nonetheless. He currently has 245 passing touchdowns, which is 404 less than Brady.

Mahomes would have to play at his current pace of 35 touchdowns per season for the next 12 seasons to beat Brady’s record. He would become the all-time leader in 2036 at the age of 42.

Career wins

During his seven seasons as a starter, Mahomes has posted a record of 89-23-0 for a winning percentage of .794. That’s the best winning percentage for any quarterback with at least 25 starts.

He’s still 162 wins behind Brady, who leads the way with 251 wins all-time. In fact, Brady has at least 65 more wins than any other quarterback, with Hall of Famers Peyton Manning and Brett Favre tied for second with 186 wins.

Mahomes would have to win 14 games per season to maintain his winning percentage, which isn’t likely, but even if he does, it would take him around 206 more games to surpass Brady’s record.

If Mahomes plays in all 17 games, he would become the winningest quarterback during the 2037 season at age 43.

Super Bowl wins

Over the course of his 21 year career, Brady made the Super Bowl 45.4 percent of the time thanks to his 10 appearances and winning seven of them – more than any team in their franchise history.

Mahomes isn’t far behind in terms of appearance with five in his seven seasons as a starter, but his recent loss to the Eagles sets him back a bit.

He now holds a 3-2 record in Super Bowls compared to Brady’s 7-3. Given five appearances in seven years likely isn’t sustainable, Mahomes has to win more big games if he wants a chance of catching Brady.

At his current pace, Mahomes could win his eighth Super Bowl after the 2036 season at the age of 42. He is currently tied with Troy Aikman on three wins, but trails Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw with four.

Things can quickly change however as just a year ago Mahomes was on pace to tie Brady’s Super Bowl appearances after the 2031 season when he will be 36. Another Super Bowl win next year would put him on pace to win eight by the 2033 season when he will be 38.
