Patrick Mahomes will start the Super Bowl with an eye-catching advantage over Jalen Hurts

The countdown to New Orleans is on. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs both arrived in Louisiana on Sunday; by this time next week, the NFL will know whether the Chiefs became the league’s first team to win three successive Super Bowl titles…or if the Eagles put an end to those aspirations by claiming their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Super Bowl LIX Special: Everything you need to know about Eagles vs Chiefs

As of Monday, the line on this fascinating Super Bowl showdown has not moved: Kansas City remains favored, albeit by a slim 1.5-point margin. After all, the Chiefs defeated the Eagles two years ago in Super Bowl LVII, and Kansas City has the Patrick Mahomes advantage — though Philly would counter that their quarterback, Jalen Hurts, is every bit as good as the three-time Super Bowl MVP.

Mahomes’ incredible record indoors

One reason that the Chiefs are unlikely to see that 1.5-point line reduced further is because of where this game will take place. New Orleans is home to the Caesars Superdome, a 49-year-old indoor venue — just the sort of setting in which Mahomes thrives.

Though Mahomes and the Chiefs are nearly unbeatable at their Arrowhead Stadium, the two-time NFL MVP boasts a 16-1 record in his career when he plays in an indoor stadium. The one loss was to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3 of the 2022 season, though the roof was open for that game, meaning Mahomes’ record indoors or in a domed stadium could really be 16-0.

The Eagles’ defense may be able to slow down Mahomes at different points in Super Bowl LIX, but that is another challenge for Philly as it seeks to become the first NFC team to win a New Orleans-based Super Bowl since 1996. To keep the ball away from Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Xavier Worthy, the Eagles will need a heavy dosage of productive runs from 2,000-yard rusher Saquon Barkley, as well as timely throws and short-yardage conversions from Hurts — who is one of a select few signal-callers to reach two Super Bowls before his 27th birthday.
