Patrick Mahomes used as pawn to humiliate Jerry Jones for Texas floods donation

The state of Texas continues to deal with floods that have rampaged several counties and affected tons of families. Some high-profile celebrities have done their part to help, despite many thinking it’s not enough. The Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and NFL Foundation made a joint donation of $1.5 million, yet dealt with some outrage due to the amount. But at least that donation was true, while others are being made up.

A story about Patrick Mahomes donating $1.5 million to victims of the floods recently went viral. It was also alleged that the quarterback rented out two apartments for affected families. That story turned out to be a hoax, but it didn’t stop plenty of people from running with it.

Patrick Mahomes’ Texas floods donation story is not true

In fact, it was used as a form of shaming Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for “only” donating $500,000. It helped some justify the stigma around Jones as being cheap, even though the rumors weren’t true.

There were several fans in the comments section of a post from sports writer Tracy Graven, who believed the Mahomes story. Fans defended Jones for actually making a donation, in addition to his other philanthropic moves over the years.

  • “Anyone giving $500,000 is never a cheap ass. Spreading goodness is the point, which you seemed to miss.”
  • “Just be clear “cheap ass” Jerry Jones has given away BILLIONS.”

It’s yet another cautionary tale about reading everything you see on the Internet. Unfortunately, many see a story once and just assume it’s true, never to be fact-checked again. This is one of those times, with Mahomes and Jones at the forefront.
