Patrick Mahomes talks Super Bowl aspirations after Cowboys loss

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the season aiming for NFL history, but things have gone sideways fast. A team once expected to cruise toward a fourth straight Super Bowl appearance now finds itself fighting just to get back into the playoff picture. TheThanksgiving loss to the Dallas Cowboys didn’t knock the Chiefs out, but it definitely made the climb a lot harder.

At 6-6, Kansas City is sitting in ninth place in the AFC. The offense has been unpredictable, the defense has struggled to hold leads, and the penalties keep piling up at the worst possible moments. It hasn’t been the version of the Chiefs fans have grown used to. Still, through all the turbulence, Patrick Mahomes continues to project calm.

For him, the mission hasn’t changed. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectations haven’t changed.

“I mean, our ceiling is playing in the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said after the loss, via SI.com. He pointed out that the roster is mostly intact, with new additions that were supposed to raise their level even further.

I mean, our ceiling is playing in the Super Bowl… We’ve got all the same guys, and we added players. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to go out and do it every single week, on a week-in, week-out basis.

Chiefs road the Super Bowl just got harder: A desperate playoff push begins

Mahomes admits that the Chiefs’ biggest issue is one everyone can see:consistency. “We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody,” he said. He emphasized that the team needs full-game stability, not just flashes of brilliance. For Kansas City, it’s no longer about waiting for the big moment. It’s about building reliable momentum from kickoff to final whistle.

That pressure applies to him too. Mahomes said he needs to be the one driving that steadiness every single week, especially now that the margin for error is basically gone.

The math is simple and brutal. Winning the AFC West would require Kansas City to win out and for the Denver Broncos to lose out. That scenario is extremely unlikely. A wild-card spot is still possible, but it probably requires a five-game winning streak to close the season.

“You’ve got to win every game now, and hope that’s enough,” Mahomes said. Their next challenge is the Houston Texans on December 7 after a much-needed 10-day break.

We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody… So, we’ve got to be more consistent. It starts with me being consistent throughout the entire game, not in just big moments. That’s something that we have to do throughout an entire game and week-to-week. It’s not just one time.

Penalties have been one of the biggest problems, with the Chiefs committing 10 against Dallas. Head coach Andy Reid said some were questionable but didn’t hide the larger issue. “We’ve got to clean up a few things,” Reid said. “We were close, but we had too many opportunities that we gave away.“

Kansas City still has the talent to make this interesting. The question is whether they can flip the switch in time. And if Mahomes’ confidence means anything, the Chiefs believe they can.
