Patrick Mahomes speaks out after tough loss to the Denver Broncos and takes full responsibility: “I didn’t capitalize on opportunities”

It was another frustrating day for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday as they fell 22-19 to the Denver Broncos in a game that came down to the final seconds.

Coming off their bye week, the Chiefs hoped to rebound after a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 10, but the red-hot Broncos, riding an eight-game winning streak, proved too resilient.

Kansas City fought hard and pushed the game to the wire. The deciding moment came when Denver kicker Wil Lutz connected on a 35-yard field goal as the clock expired, leaving the Chiefs with a 5-5 record.

For Mahomes, it was far from his best performance. The two-time NFL MVP completed 29 of 45 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, a stat line that underscored the inconsistencies that have plagued Kansas City this season.

After the loss, Mahomes was candid in his postgame remarks. “We’ve got to get more consistent, and I think that starts with me,” he said, speaking to reporters via NFL correspondent Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports.

The Chiefs quarterback didn’t shy away from addressing his crucial interception in the third quarter, an ill-timed pass in the red zone.

“With the type of football game we’re in, don’t put the football in harm’s way,” Mahomes explained.

“Take the three points and move onto the next possession.” It was a reminder that in tight games, minimizing mistakes is often the difference between victory and defeat.

Missed opportunities prove costly for Kansas City

The Chiefs had another chance late in the fourth quarter. After Denver tied the game at 19-19 with a 54-yard field goal, Mahomes led the offense with roughly four minutes to orchestrate a game-winning drive.

However, the effort ended in disappointment when he was sacked on third-and-10 from their own 36-yard line, forcing Kansas City into a three-and-out and giving Denver the ball back. Bo Nix led a 58-yard drive culminating in Lutz‘s field goal that sealed the outcome.

“Having an opportunity at the end of the game and not coming through… Just being better in that scenario,” Mahomes said. “… There are things here and there, but I think that’s the biggest one… You want opportunities… but I didn’t come through.”

The remarks highlighted the quarterback’s accountability, a hallmark of his leadership despite the setbacks.

Looking ahead, Mahomes and the Chiefs will need to regroup quickly. Their next test comes on Sunday, Nov. 23, when they host the 8-2 Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium.

The team will aim to correct mistakes and capitalize on opportunities in a matchup that could define the first half of Kansas City’s season.

For Mahomes, the message is clear: take responsibility, learn from errors, and lead his team to rebound in the high-pressure environment of the AFC.
