We may have just witnessed one of the greatest injustices in sports, specifically in the NFL, after Bill Belichick failed to enter the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Yes, believe it or not, the winner of six Super Bowls will have to wait at least one more year to earn his place among the immortals in Canton, Ohio.
Bill Belichick not only won six Super Bowls as a head coach, but also captured two more as a defensive coordinator. He is the winningest coach in playoff history and ranks second in regular-season victories. Even so, he did not receive the required votes -40 out of 50 (80%)- to be inducted into the Class of 2026.
This has undoubtedly caused major surprise, as for many fans and analysts Belichick was considered a lock to be inducted on his first ballot, given his historic legacy of wins, championships, and dominance in the NFL. The decision has sparked anger among several athletes, many of whom have already voiced their frustration over what they see as a terrible decision.

Patrick Mahomes, clearly upset
There is no doubt that Patrick Mahomes is one of the most respected voices in the NFL, and he also experienced several great battles against Bill Belichick, for whom he always showed respect. One of their most memorable matchups came in the AFC Championship Game, when Tom Brady’s Patriots defeated Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs to advance to the Super Bowl.
For that reason, one of the figures who expressed the most frustration on social media over Bill Belichick not making the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility was Patrick Mahomes. The current Chiefs quarterback posted the following message: “Insane… don’t even understand how this could be possible.”
It is almost certain that Bill Belichick will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame, because that is where he belongs. Still, it is surprising and even disrespectful that the most successful Super Bowl-winning head coach was not selected on his first opportunity. This decision will continue to generate negative opinions toward those who voted against the former Patriots head coach.
Conspiracy theories quickly emerged, as Belichick and the Patriots were involved in high-profile scandals such as Spygate (2007) -recording opponents’ signals- and Deflategate (2015) -footballs with irregular air pressure- the latter resulting in a four-game suspension for Tom Brady. Even so, there is still no clear explanation for what many consider a historic injustice.
