Patrick Mahomes puts the NFL on hold and shows his recovery by making a surprise appearance at another sport

Patrick Mahomes is taking time to focus on recovery, following the most serious injury of his career late in the 2025 NFL season, when he tore both his ACL and LCL in his left knee during a December 14 loss in Week 15.

The injury immediately ended the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s season, and he underwent surgery the following day to repair the damaged ligaments, while beginning an intensive rehabilitation program, aiming to return fully prepared for the 2026 campaign and Week 1 matchups.

Recovery from ACL reconstruction typically takes up to nine months, meaning Mahomes’ availability will depend entirely on how his rehab progresses, yet reports and sightings suggest he has already regained mobility and is advancing steadily toward full activity.

Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, has also been seen without a protective walking boot and has gradually resumed public appearances, signaling to fans and teammates that he is returning to full health, while maintaining discipline and structure in his rehab routine.

On Wednesday, March 11, he made a surprise appearance at the BYU vs. West Virginia college basketball game at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, sharing clips on Instagram and giving fans a glimpse into his offseason while highlighting his ongoing recovery and progress.

The Chiefs have also been active during Mahomes’ downtime, as the team works to rebuild after a disappointing 6-11 season that marked their first missed playoff appearance since 2014, while focusing on strengthening both their offensive weapons and roster depth.

Mahomes lands spicy offensive weapons for 2026 NFL season

Off the field, Kansas City has taken decisive steps to prepare for Mahomes’ return, including bringing back offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, re-signing longtime tight end Travis Kelce, and adding Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker in free agency to bolster the offense.

Walker, who earned MVP honors in Super Bowl LX, agreed to a three-year deal worth $43.05 million in base value and $28.7 million fully guaranteed, according to sources, and his speed, vision, and explosiveness are expected to enhance the Chiefs’ rushing attack significantly.

The Chiefs prioritized improving their ground game, impressed by Walker’s ability to force missed tackles even behind inconsistent offensive lines, with 61 missed tackles and ten runs of 20-plus yards last season, demonstrating both explosiveness and the ability to create big plays.

Kelce, one of the NFL’s most decorated tight ends, also agreed to return for a 14th season with the Chiefs on a deal worth $12 million, maximum $15 million, remaining a trusted target for Mahomes and leading the team in receptions, yards, and touchdowns despite turning 36 last season.

By retaining Kelce and adding Walker, the Chiefs have strengthened both their receiving and rushing weapons for Mahomes, providing elite talent around him while he continues to focus on returning to peak form following major knee reconstruction.

Mahomes’ public appearances and the addition of high-level offensive players signal optimism for the 2026 season, as he works toward full recovery, while the Chiefs ensure the supporting cast is prepared to elevate his game when he resumes playing at full capacity.
