As the 2025 NFL season has unfolded, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have experienced a shocking reversal of fortune.
Once considered Super Bowl favorites and with Mahomes in MVP contention, the team has now spiraled into a crisis, leaving analysts and fans questioning whether the aura of invincibility surrounding the franchise has faded.
Through Week 9, Kansas City appeared unstoppable, but a decisive loss to the Buffalo Bills led by Josh Allen marked the beginning of a troubling slide.
Since that defeat, the Chiefs have gone 1-4, with their only victory coming in an overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts.
This decline officially ended their streak of AFC West titles, a run the team had maintained since 2016, and now the Chiefs have only an 11-12% chance of making the playoffs, according to projections by ESPN.
While Mahomes‘ season statistics through 13 games, 63.1% completions, 3,398 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, do not immediately signal disaster, the context of those numbers tells a different story.
The offense appears disjointed, and the decisive moments that previously defined Mahomes’ greatness are slipping away. As analyst Osi Umenyiora noted, “Sometimes the magic is just gone.”
A closer look at Mahomes’ struggles and the Chiefs’ offense
The defining example came in a recent loss to the Houston Texans, where Mahomes completed only 14-of-33 passes for 160 yards and threw three interceptions in a 20-10 defeat.
Omenyiora was blunt in his assessment: “Patrick Mahomes is playing like a mid quarterback…The Emperor has no clothes!” He highlighted that the Chiefs, historically a team that could rely on schematics and playmaking to bail each other out, now appear vulnerable when those advantages fail.
The issues extend beyond Mahomes’ personal performance. The offensive line has struggled to protect him consistently, and the receivers have been unable to consistently create separation.
Defenses are adapting to Kansas City‘s schemes, and the combination of predictability and errors has led to a loss of the feared edge the Chiefs once possessed.
Looking ahead, Week 15 presents a critical matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. A loss could effectively eliminate Kansas City from playoff contention, highlighting the precariousness of their position.
While some argue this could be a temporary slump, others fear it may signify the early stages of the end of the Mahomes-era dynasty.
As analysts have noted, even dynasties eventually face moments of reckoning, and the Chiefs’ recent performances raise difficult questions about how long their dominance can last.
For Patrick Mahomes, the path forward is clear: restore confidence, lead the offense decisively, and reclaim the magic that once made him, and the Chiefs, nearly untouchable. Otherwise, the “Emperor” may soon be exposed.
