Patrick Mahomes’ problems may have an old solution: Tyreek Hill crosses paths with the Chiefs once again

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ opening week defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers has already sparked questions about Patrick Mahomes‘ supporting cast, and Tyreek Hill‘s uncertain future in Miami could provide the solution.

The Chiefs, beginning their 2025 campaign with a 27-21 loss to LA, are now last in the AFC West after the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos also won their Week 1 games.

They’re currently looking like a shadow of the team that once dominated the AFC West, as their star quarterback was outplayed by Justin Herbert, and his tight end, Travis Kelce, was limited to only two receptions.

As if things couldn’t get worse with persistent errors on the night, Kelce also took Xavier Worthy out of the contest early when the pair collided on the field.

That left Mahomes as the team’s leading rusher, highlighting just how much the offense lacked balance in terms of the passing game, making the night far easier for Jim Harbaugh‘s defense.

“This will be a big lesson for us,” Mahomes admitted after the game. “They definitely came out with more energy than we did. We got to get better from the start.”

Kansas City‘s performance pointed to a glaring issue that has persisted since Hill‘s 2022 departure: the absence of a dynamic deep threat capable of tilting defensive schemes. Without such a weapon, Mahomes is often forced to carry the offense on his own.

This is who both Worthy and Rashee Rice are supposed to be, but with the former now hurt and the latter suspended, the team finds itself depending on aging veterans or Patrick‘s own individual flair.

Why should the Miami Dolphins trade away Tyreek Hill?

On the other side of the league, the Miami Dolphins are experiencing turmoil of their own as their season began with a humiliating 33-8 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts, in which Daniel Jones looked like the best quarterback on the field.

Tua Tagovailoa struggled, finishing 14-of-23 for 114 yards, two interceptions, and three sacks, and although Hill led the team with four catches for 40 yards, his contribution could not mask a broken offensive system that managed just 12 first downs and 211 total yards.

The Dolphins‘ unraveling is not new. Tyreek clashed with the team late last season, reportedly requested a trade before apologizing publicly during Super Bowl week, and now faces mounting criticism for his $27 million salary.

For a franchise facing instability, moving their most expensive player could become an unavoidable decision-but one that could offer them a chance to reset and improve in the coming years.

Reuniting Hill with Mahomes would immediately restore one of the NFL’s most feared partnerships. From 2016 to 2021, Hill‘s speed transformed Kansas City‘s offense, forcing defenses into deep coverage and freeing Kelce underneath.

For the Dolphins, trading Hill would allow them to reset, and with Tagovailoa regressing, Mike McDaniel under pressure, and the roster in need of restructuring, shedding a massive contract could mark the first step toward a rebuild.
