Patrick Mahomes has already etched his name into NFL history books with two league MVPs and three Super Bowl titles and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has a chance to eclipse the legendary Tom Brady too.
Whilst he is busy chasing down the iconic seven-time Super Bowl champion’s haul of rings, as Mahomes enters the 2025/26 NFL season, the focus is shifting to a critical statistical milestone: avoiding interceptions.
According to league data, the 29-year-old needs 182 consecutive pass attempts without a turnover to surpass Brady, Russell Wilson, and Joe Burrow for the fourth-lowest interception percentage in NFL history.
Currently, Tyrod Taylor holds the No. 4 position. Mahomes‘ mark stands at 1.8%, but he has struggled to maintain that in recent seasons amid offensive line and receiver struggles with the Chiefs.
Despite dazzling with his deep throws and off-platform passes, Patrick‘s decision-making efficiency has come under scrutiny. He threw 11 interceptions in 2024, part of a concerning trend-50 total interceptions since the start of 2021.
These numbers place pressure on the Chiefs signal-caller to revert to his earlier form, particularly his 2019-2020 campaigns, which saw far fewer mistakes through the air and raced into being considered the league’s best QB.
While critics often hone in on Mahomes‘ highlight-reel throws, it’s his ability to avoid turnovers that will ultimately determine whether he can chase down Brady‘s all-time greatness.
Can Mahomes strike back after Super Bowl LIX woes?
However, discipline has faltered recently, especially in big moments like the lopsided Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. On February 9, he threw a pick-six to allow the Eagles to open the scoring and Kansas City never recovered.
CBS Sports reports that Mahomes still ranks among the best in history in terms of interception percentage, tied with Brady himself. But unlike Brady, whose game was defined by methodical efficiency and situational awareness, Mahomes’ instincts can sometimes lead to costly risks.
In 2025, Mahomes also has the chance to outpace Justin Herbert, who currently sits at 1.5% for the third-best interception rate to become the man with the lowest percentage of interceptions-per-pass in the AFC West.
With two matchups against Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers on the calendar, he may need not only stellar offensive performances but also help from his defense to preserve favorable field positions and minimize risk.
If Mahomes hopes to make a genuine run at Brady‘s seven championships, sharpening this element of his play could be the key. It’s no longer enough to rely on improvisation; precision must now be his priority.
The Kansas City Chiefs will open their season against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 5 in Brazil, heading to South America as part of the NFL’s plans to expand the league’s image around the world.
