Patrick Mahomes misses out on chance to take Kansas City to new heights after WNBA bid

Patrick Mahomes has built a reputation on and off the field as a game-changer.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, just 29 years old, has already claimed three Super Bowl rings and five AFC Championships. But even he doesn’t win every time.

On Monday, Mahomes received disappointing news in one of his off-field pursuits: Kansas City was not selected as one of the new WNBA expansion cities.

Despite his advocacy and hopes of bringing a WNBA franchise to Missouri, the league announced it would be adding teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia instead. Other cities like St. Louis, Austin, Nashville, Houston, Miami, Denver, and Charlotte also came up short in this round of bids.

A passion for women’s sports in Kansas City

Mahomes’ commitment to women’s sports isn’t new or surface-level. Along with his wife, Brittany Mahomes – a former soccer player herself – he is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, the local team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Their involvement has gone beyond name-only status, as both Mahomeses have worked to elevate the franchise and invest in the community.

The attempt to bring a WNBA team to Kansas City seemed like the natural next step. Mahomes’ stature in the sports world and his passion for women’s athletics made him a high-profile backer of the bid. Unfortunately, the WNBA had other plans – for now.

But as is often the case with Mahomes, what may seem like a loss quickly turns into a win in another arena. Even as the WNBA door remains closed, Mahomes is making a meaningful impact elsewhere.

Giving back closer to home

Through his foundation, 15 and the Mahomies, the quarterback announced a $50,000 scholarship fund aimed at supporting students in his hometown of Tyler, Texas.

In collaboration with Bold.org, the initiative will award five local students with $10,000 scholarships each. This charitable move adds another layer to Mahomes’ reputation – not just as a sports icon, but as a community leader.

His wife Brittany was quick to show her support, expressing pride and admiration on Instagram. “Patrick never stops finding ways to give back,” she shared in her story, reinforcing their shared commitment to youth and education.

For the Mahomes family, it’s not just about football or business ventures – it’s about legacy. Whether it’s attempting to bring a professional women’s basketball team to their city or helping underserved students gain access to higher education, their impact continues to reach far beyond the gridiron.

As training camp looms later in July, Mahomes will soon turn his full focus back to football. But even in the offseason, he’s proving that leadership comes in many forms.

Kansas City may have to wait a little longer for its WNBA team, but thanks to Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, it already has champions off the field.
