The Kansas City Chiefs are facing another significant roster change as veteran defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi takes his talents to the New York Jets, leaving behind seven years of loyalty, consistency, and championship pedigree.
Nnadi, who played a crucial role in helping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs secure three Super Bowl titles, will now look to make an impact in New York as the Jets continue rebuilding their defensive front.
The 28-year-old lineman, set to turn 29 in May, was a third-round draft pick in 2018 out of Florida State and quickly became a staple of Kansas City’s defense.
Throughout his career with the Chiefs, Nnadi logged 115 career games and 87 starts, while also proving remarkably durable – missing only two games during his time in the NFL.
Although Nnadi was a consistent starter for the first six seasons of his career, his role diminished in 2024 when he started just one game in 17 appearances, signaling a shift that may have paved the way for his exit.
Despite fewer starts, Nnadi remained an essential piece of Kansas City’s rotation and helped anchor their run defense throughout multiple deep playoff runs, including 12 postseason appearances and three Super Bowl victories.
Jets Add Proven Winner to Reinforce Defensive Line
For the Jets, signing Nnadi means securing a battle-tested run-stopper to help fill the gap left by Javon Kinlaw, who joined the Washington Commanders this offseason on a three-year, $45 million deal.
New York has been active in reinforcing its defensive interior, also bringing in Byron Cowart and Jay Tufele. Still, Nnadi’s experience on championship-winning teams sets him apart from other free agency acquisitions.
Known primarily for his run-stuffing ability, Nnadi has accumulated 233 career tackles and five sacks, making him a valuable addition to a Jets defensive front that will likely feature Quinnen Williams as the centerpiece.
His arrival offers durability and leadership – qualities that have been hallmarks of his game since entering the league.
Though Nnadi’s sack totals have never been flashy, his ability to clog up running lanes and take on double teams has been critical for Kansas City’s defensive scheme over the years.
Now, the Jets hope he can bring that same kind of tenacity to bolster their defense, which struggled to stop the run consistently last season.
Nnadi’s deal was announced by SportsTrust Advisors, his representation, and while the terms of the contract remain undisclosed, his addition is expected to bolster the Jets’ depth and experience in the trenches.
With Mahomes and the Chiefs moving forward without one of their long-time enforcers, the question remains whether Kansas City will be able to replace his presence up front.
For now, however, it’s the Jets who gain a seasoned veteran with a winning mentality, hoping to translate that into postseason success of their own.
