Patrick Mahomes keeps losing even without Chiefs: His embarrassing post-New Year’s move

The 2025 NFL season was practically a disaster for the Kansas City Chiefs. Any franchise is afforded a down season, but in what could very well be Travis Kelce‘s final season in the league, the Chiefs fell incredibly short of their lofty Super Bowl expectations.

Making matters even worse was Patrick Mahomes‘ late season injury, a multi-ligament knee injury that required surgery. Mahomes should be back at some point in 2026, but until then he doesn’t have too much to look forward to football-wise. With the NFL season in the rearview mirror, Mahomes turned his attention to college football, where his alma mater – Texas Tech – was fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Unfortunately, they fell flat against the Oregon Ducks, failing to score a point in a 23-0 loss.

Patrick Mahomes’ rookie Chiefs teammate forces him to wear Oregon Ducks jersey

It seems that Texas Tech losing led to some more misfortune, and some ridicule, for Mahomes. Jeffrey Bassa, a Chiefs rookie who played at Oregon for four seasons, shared a video of Mahomes wearing a Ducks jersey on Friday. Clearly, Mahomes lost a bet to his fellow teammate.

Mahomes was wearing Bassa’s No. 2 Oregon jersey. Bassa was a versatile player for the Ducks, starting out as a safety before switching to linebacker. He did a little bit of everything on the defensive side of the ball in college.

Bassa hasn’t been able to translate his Oregon success to the NFL yet, playing just 17 defensive snaps so far, while he focuses more on special teams. As a fifth round rookie, it seems he’s gotten along well with Mahomes in the locker room, which could go a long way towards him carving out more of a role going forward.
