The game against the Las Vegas Raiders is vital to the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes. Head coach Andy Reid expected to have his entire squad ready for the crucial challenge; however, one notable absence is causing concern: that of tackle Josh Simmons, Patrick Mahomes’ main bodyguard.
The Chiefs have been slowly recovering from a poor start to the season. After starting the season with an 0-2 record, they have already leveled their record at 3-3 and continue to fight for a climb in the AFC West standings.
The return of Rashee Rice from a six-game suspension raised hopes for the team and fans. It’s worth remembering that the star receiver was suspended for being involved in a car accident in late 2024 in Texas.
However, optimism for Rice’s return was somewhat diluted when Simmons went MIA. Even worse, the team hasn’t clarified the exact reasons for his absence, raising alarms among fans.
Mahomes lost his bodyguard
Although it was already known that Simmons wouldn’t take part in the game, the Chiefs confirmed his absence this Saturday, publishing their list of inactive players on X (formerly Twitter).
Simmons joined the Chiefs as the team’s first-round pick (27th overall) in the 2025 draft. The Ohio State graduate arrived with the mission of protecting Mahomes, who suffered 36 sacks last season.
The Chiefs continue to struggle in that department and have allowed 10 sacks this year. However, Simmons’ arrival gave Mahomes more confidence and time to find his receivers.
Now, Reid and Mahomes will have to rely on third-year tackle Wanya Morris to fill the void left by Simmons. Morris may alternate duties with backup right tackle Taylor Moore, or if things get out of hand, even with one of the guards.
Simmons’ absence remains a mystery
So far, the Chiefs’ front office has not revealed the reason for Simmons’ absence. The young tackle is listed as “not injury related, personal” on the team’s inactive report.
Meanwhile, head coach Andy Reid has only said that Simmons was absent due to a “family situation.” He also stated, “General Manager Brett Veach is handling everything.”
Regardless of the reasons, there’s no doubt that Simmons’ absence was a severe blow to Mahomes and his offensive line. Fans can only hope the situation is resolved in the most favorable way possible for the rookie and that he can return to action soon.
