Patrick Mahomes hints Chiefs wide receivers could be key to Kansas City success

After their shocking Super Bowl defeat, the Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2025 NFL season with something to prove, particularly on offense and Patrick Mahomes backs the wide receivers to be in fine form in the 2025/26 NFL season.

While their success remains undeniable, it hasn’t been the high-octane brand of football that defined their early championship runs as Andy Reid’s offense has given way to a more measured, sometimes sluggish, approach in recent seasons.

Central to that shift is the performance and inconsistency of the wide receiver group since the departure of Tyreek Hill as Matt Nagy struggled to capture the same explosiveness since the 2021/22 NFL season.

Despite boasting one of the league’s most prolific quarterbacks in Mahomes and a future Hall of Famer in tight end Travis Kelce, Kansas City’s passing attack dropped to a modest 14th in the NFL last season.

They averaged a lowly 222 yards per game with 26 touchdowns. But there are signs of renewal as Mahomes, speaking with Kay Adams, expressed confidence in the targets around him.

“We have so many weapons,” Mahomes told Kay Adams. “Let’s just go and maximize it all.

“It’s not going to be one person. It’s going to be the entire offense, going out there, trying to showcase what the Kansas City Chiefs truly are.”

Who are the Kansas City Chiefs’ main three wide receivers for the 2025/26 NFL season?

While the Chiefs’ 2025 wide receiver corps includes several familiar faces, it’s the emergence of young talent and the return of key players from injury that offer hope for resurgence, numbering 13 players in total.

The WR spot features a blend of experience, speed, and potential and leading the group are Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a trio Mahomes believes offers unprecedented depth.

“I think it is going to be the deepest,” Mahomes continued. “It’s hard to always say that you had Tyreek and Travis Kelce in the prime of their careers.

“That is hard to always say it’s deeper than that, but at the same time, it’s not the depth. It’s going to be hard to make cuts because we have so many great receivers.”

Leading the field is Rashee Rice, who was poised for a breakout in 2024 after leading the team in receptions in 2023, but a knee injury curtailed his season early.

Despite missing most of the year, Rice had an impressive spring in offseason practices and is expected to return at full strength. He provides a versatile playmaker who excels after the catch and consistently moves the chains.

Stepping up in his place was their rookie sensation, Xavier Worthy, who also became a key contributor last season as he led all Chiefs receivers with nine total touchdowns and posted 287 postseason receiving yards.

That number is the second-most ever by a rookie in NFL playoff history and he is known for his blazing 4.21-second 40-yard dash, Worthy offers a vertical threat unlike any other on the roster.

And finally there is Marquise Brown, a former first-round pick, joined Kansas City last season but was sidelined for much of the year due to a sternoclavicular posterior dislocation sustained in the preseason.

He returned late in the year and made a visible impact, catching 14 passes for 141 yards in just five appearances.
