One person is going to be willing the Kansas City Chiefs on more than anybody else on Sunday when they take the field at Caesars Superdome for the Super Bowl.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a duty to deliver again on the biggest stage, because his very ill grandfather will be watching on.
Patrick’s mother, Randi Mahomes, spoke to PEOPLE during the NFL Honors in New Orleans on Thursday and she revealed that Patrick’s grandfather is in a hospice now and is ‘hanging on’ to see his grandson win the Super Bowl for an unprecedented third time in a row.
Randi has been updating Patrick on his grandfather’s health recently but she said she doesn’t want to ‘bug him’ but has been letting him know that his grandfather is ‘watching and he’s excited’.

He is ready for the Super Bowl
When explaining that Randy sometimes has bad days, Randi said: “the one thing that he remembers” is when the Super Bowl is. “I know that it has meant a lot to him,” she said.
“And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.
“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too].”
Randi first updated the public that Randy had gone into hospice care on January 24. She included a photo of herself and her father, and referenced Bible verse Colossians 3:20, which reads “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
As well as that, she wrote: “My dad is in hospice and I’m lost for words.”
