Patrick Mahomes gets challenged by Chiefs coach in hilarious throw contest at Kansas City training camp

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are having great training camp practices, as the defending AFC champions get ready for the 2025 NFL regular season.

The team that is closer to becoming a dinasty than any other franchise currently will open up the next campaign against Division rival Los Angeles Chargers at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

With Mahomes as their leader, iconic tight end Travis Kelce coming back for his 13th NFL season – and probably his last one -, as well as legendary head coach Andy Reid calling the plays, the Chiefs hope to make another deep playoff run next year.

Patrick Mahomes gets challenged by Chiefs coach

Patrick Mahomes faced off against Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy in a hilarious precision passing contest at the team’s training camp. Fans and teammates gathered to watch the showdown and they absolutely loved the competition.

Mahomes, known for his elite accuracy, hit every target with ease. Nagy started off strong, but eventually missed his marks, giving the crowd a reason to laugh and cheer for their quarterback, one of the most accurate passers in the game.

The contest highlighted the lighthearted side of camp while the Chiefs kept working hard. Between 7-on-7 and red zone drills, Mahomes connected with multiple receivers, including touchdowns to Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals, and tight end Noah Gray. The sky is the limit for Kansas City.

An interesting competition to find the next punter

For the first time in years, the Kansas City Chiefs entered training camp with multiple punters on the roster in incumbent Matt Araiza and rookie Eddie Czaplicki.

Araiza handled punting duties for the Chiefs in 2024 and showed flashes of what made him such a highly-touted prospect only a few years ago, but Czaplicki – the recipient of the Ray Guy Award in 2024 as the top punter in the FBS – has certainly demonstrated that he belongs as well.

Special Teams Coordinator / Assistant Head Coach Dave Toub spoke about that battle following Friday’s practice: “It’s a good competition. I think we have two NFL punters,” Toub said. “Matt probably has the edge over these first few days, but I expect – just because it was [all] new for him – for Eddie to [be] better next week. It’s a real competition.”
