Patrick Mahomes’ father will remain in prison until March while prosecutors seek a 10-year sentence

Patrick Mahomes Sr. will remain behind bars after a judge ordered him held in custody while prosecutors pursue a probation violation that could send him to prison for years.

The 55-year-old former Major League Baseball pitcher is currently being detained without bond as the court prepares to weigh whether his probation should be revoked at a hearing scheduled for next month.

Mahomes Sr. was booked into Smith County Jail earlier this week and has not been granted release pending the hearing.

Prosecutors are asking the court to impose a sentence of up to 10 years, arguing that he violated the strict terms of his probation stemming from a 2024 driving while intoxicated conviction.

That probation was the result of a guilty plea in which Mahomes Sr. avoided prison time in exchange for five years of court supervision.

The conditions were clear and uncompromising. He was required to abstain from alcohol entirely, submit to continuous monitoring and complete regular community service as part of the agreement.

According to TMZ, the current case centres on a report from his SCRAM alcohol monitoring ankle device.

Authorities claim the device registered a high alcohol reading on January 1, triggering an alert to his probation officer. That notification set off a review process that ultimately led to his arrest and detention.

In addition to the alleged alcohol violation, prosecutors contend that Mahomes Sr. failed to keep up with his community service requirements. The probation report states that he was expected to complete three hours per month but did not meet that standard for several months, a lapse the state argues reflects ongoing noncompliance.

Mahomes Sr. is expected to challenge those claims at his hearing on March 9. Court records indicate that he submitted urine samples on January 5 and 9, both of which reportedly tested negative for alcohol. Despite those results, prosecutors have chosen to proceed with the violation request, leaving the final decision in the hands of the judge.

Past offences add weight to the court’s decision

The case does not exist in isolation. Mahomes Sr. has been arrested for driving while intoxicated at least three times, a history that looms over the current proceedings. His most recent DWI arrest came just days before the Super Bowl in 2024, a moment that drew national attention because of his son’s prominence in the game.

His son, Patrick Mahomes, went on to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers, while his father’s legal troubles unfolded in the background. That contrast only heightened scrutiny around the case and its implications.

Under Texas law, a probation revocation can result in the original sentence being imposed in full, particularly when violations involve alcohol or repeated failures to comply with court ordered conditions.

Prosecutors are expected to argue that the SCRAM alert, combined with missed community service, shows a pattern that warrants incarceration rather than continued supervision.
