Patrick Mahomes doesn’t forget about his Chiefs teammates mere days after going on IR

Unlike he usually does before the NFL Christmas schedule, Patrick Mahomes is not preparing a game plan, studying film, or leading warmups for the Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, the injury-stricken star is using his passing abilities to hand out gifts to his teammates.

The face of the Kansas City franchise is navigating the most significant physical challenge of his professional career, yet he is still finding ways to show why he remains the cultural backbone of the organization.

The knee injury that forced Mahomes to injured reserve ensures he will not finish out the Chiefs‘ season, and there is real uncertainty about whether he will be ready when the next one begins.

While the long-term outlook does not suggest his career is in jeopardy, the timing and severity of the injury make it the largest obstacle he has faced since entering the NFL.

It is not just the physical recovery that looms, but the reality that the setback carries over into an offseason typically defined by momentum and continuity.

For a quarterback who has built his reputation on availability, creativity and competitive will, being forced to watch from the sidelines is a new and unwelcome reality.

Still, Mahomes has not allowed the injury or the Chiefs‘ playoffs elimination to put a downer on his holiday spirit.

Leadership that extends beyond the field

While recovering from ACL surgery, Mahomes made sure his teammates felt appreciated during the holiday stretch.

According to multiple Kansas City players’ Instagram stories, the quarterback gifted teammates PlayStation 5 consoles complete with protective, portable cases.

The gesture was not performative or publicized by Mahomes himself, but it quickly circulated as another example of how he prioritizes the people around him.

Over the years, Mahomes has developed a reputation as one of the league’s most thoughtful teammates. Past holiday seasons have included custom golf carts for his offensive line and a rotating list of practical, high-end gifts designed to make their lives easier.

Mahomes’ best gifts: From watches to e-bikes

For the offensive line in particular, Mahomes went above and beyond, gifting watches, luggage carriers, and e-bikes.

It is a consistent theme in how he operates, repaying the players who protect him and showing his appreciation for their work.

The 30-year-old quarterback does not give gifts to flaunt wealth. He gives them to reinforce trust, gratitude, and shared responsibility. That mindset has long been central to the Kansas City Chiefs‘ culture, and it remains intact even while their leader rehabs away from the field.

There will be plenty of time to analyze how the Chiefs navigate life without Mahomes under center and what his return timeline looks like.

For now, the message he continues to send is that leadership does not pause when the injury report changes, and being a franchise quarterback is about far more than throwing passes on Sundays.

For now, Mahomes must settle for a sideline role, but his impact on the squad remains as effective as ever.
