Patrick Mahomes’ dad under scrutiny as he attends Super Bowl LIX

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, all eyes aren’t just on quarterback Patrick Mahomes but also on his father, Pat Mahomes Sr. Despite his ongoing legal issues, Mahomes Sr. is expected to attend the big game, raising concerns about his behavior off the field.

Pat Mahomes Sr., a former professional baseball player, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in Texas just days before last year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Although he was granted permission to attend that game, where the Chiefs triumphed over the 49ers, this year’s circumstances are different.

In September 2024, Mahomes Sr. was sentenced to 10 days in jail, five years of probation with intense supervision during the first year, and a one-year suspension of his driver’s license. Additionally, he’s required to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and have a breathalyzer ignition device installed in his vehicle.

A history of legal troubles

This marks Mahomes Sr.‘s third DUI-related offense, with previous arrests in 2008 and 2019. His most recent arrest revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.23 nearly three times the legal limit. Despite these setbacks, he remains committed to supporting his son on game days.

“It’s kind of a tradition; I normally go to all the football games. I know he enjoys me being there, so hopefully things will work out,” Mahomes Sr. shared after his sentencing. “Hopefully it will enlighten someone else to take these measures and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

A legacy beyond the field

Before becoming known as Patrick Mahomes‘ father, Pat Sr. had an 11-year Major League Baseball career, playing for six teams, including the New York Mets during their 2000 World Series run. His athletic background introduced Patrick to MLB stars like Alex Rodriguez, who once encouraged the future NFL star to pursue baseball instead of football.

While Patrick Mahomes has undoubtedly found his calling on the gridiron, his father’s personal struggles continue to cast a shadow. As Super Bowl LIX approaches, fans and media alike will be watching both Mahomes‘ performance on the field, and his father’s conduct off it.
