The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t forgotten about the 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, and if you thought they were going to come back recharged this new season, you’re right. Or so one expert believes.
Albert Breer, NFL analyst for Sport Illustrated gave the reasons why he doesn’t think the Chiefs have weakened and “could end up being better than last year” in his article.
Leaving behind the injuries that plagued the team and the new players added to the roster could be the key to the team’s star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, being able to hurt opponents again.
“Injuries short-circuited the team’s vision [last season], and an offensive line collapsed under the weight of not having a real answer at left tackle,” Breer began by explaining in his write-up.
Rashee Rice is back. Hollywood Brown and Isiah Pacheco are healthy. Jaylon Moore was signed and Josh Simmons was drafted at left tackle. That doesn’t mean everyone will stay healthy, but it does give hope to the idea of Brown and Xavier Worthy getting downfield and unlocking Mahomes’s deep ball again. Plus, Rice and Travis Kelce running free in the space vacated underneath by defenders chasing the burners.
Mahomes, MVP again?
Considering Rice was the talk of the town before he got hurt for his strong performance as one of the “best receivers in the league,” Hollywood Brown “showed why the Chiefs bet on him,” Xavier Worthy “grew,” and Isiah Pacheco‘s “physical edge was missed late in the year,” there are only a few details left that could lead to Mahomes being MVP according to Breer.
Pacheco, Brown and Rice were all sidelined with injuries, and that didn’t help on the road to the Super Bowl. However, if they stay healthy, there is hope according to the expert analyst.
If those elements come together, and Moore or Simmons shore up the left tackle spot, it sure feels to me like Mahomes could have another MVP season.
Heading into his ninth NFL season, Patrick carries on his shoulders high expectations, the pressure to lead the team to the top, and his desire to reclaim the MVP throne.
