Patrick Mahomes celebrates Travis Kelce’s massive achievement amid retirement talk

The Kansas City Chiefs may have ended their season with a frustrating 14-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, but the game still carried historic significance for one of the franchise’s most iconic players.

Tight end Travis Kelce delivered a modest stat line-three catches for 12 yards-but those yards were enough to cement his place further in NFL history and trigger a public celebration from his longtime quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

With his performance on Sunday, Kelce became the fastest tight end in NFL history to reach 13,000 receiving yards.

He entered the contest with 12,990 career yards, making the milestone feel inevitable, yet it still required him to grind through a tightly contested divisional matchup to reach it.

Shortly after the achievement, Mahomes acknowledged the moment on X.com, posting simply: “13k!” with a muscle emoji.

Kelce one of the best TEs ever

The milestone is another staggering entry on a résumé that already places Kelce among the most accomplished players the position has ever seen.

He also crossed another historic threshold in the same game, recording the two receptions he needed to move past Terrell Owens for eighth place on the NFL’s all-time receptions list.

Owens finished his career with 1,078 catches, while Kelce entered Sunday’s game with 1,077.

Despite the individual accomplishments, the context surrounding the game was far more sobering.

The loss officially closed the season for the Chiefs at 6-11, and with Kelce approaching the end of his contract, speculation continues to grow that the performance against the Raiders could be the final game of his NFL career.

If that proves to be the case, the season as a whole will be remembered more for uncertainty than dominance, even if it ended with history being made.

Kelce addresses retirement talk

Following the defeat to their AFC West rivals, Kelce addressed both the game and the looming questions about his future.

Rather than focusing on statistics or records, he emphasized his appreciation for his teammates and the organization.

“First thing’s first, I just love this team like Chris Jones over here pointing at me, I love that guy. Just proud of the way we finished even though it ended the way it did.

The guys still showed up, gave it their all and that’s all you can ask for man. I got so much love for this team, this organization, the people here. So I’ll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings tomorrow and get close to the family and figure things out.”

When asked whether he plans to make a quick decision on retirement or take time to reflect, Kelce made it clear that nothing is decided.

“Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I’ve gotta take some time. Last year was a little bit easier, right away I wanted to give kind of give this one a shot. But I don’t know, we’ll see.”

For now, the future remains unresolved. Whether this milestone marks the closing chapter of Kelce‘s career or simply another landmark along the way will be determined in the months ahead.
