Patrick Mahomes can’t hide his pain as he fires off passes while mic’ed up at Chiefs practice

Patrick Mahomesis settling into rhythm after an off-season full of reflection. With time to process what didn’t go right last year, he’s treating training camp and preseason as a fresh start – a chance to reset, get sharp, and make the adjustments needed for another deep run.

Keeping camp loose

For Mahomes, it’s not just about the responsibility of leading the team to the top, but also about keeping things light enough so the group flows with confidence and energy.

Even with the pressure of finding timing with new receivers and fine-tuning communication at the line, Mahomes leaned on his trademark humor. Mic’ed up during Chiefs training, he decided to put on a show – pretending to be in pain every time he threw a pass. Exaggerated groans, playful complaints, and offhand jokes turned basic drills into a comedy sketch that had his teammates quite entertained.

It was a reminder that even in the grind, morale matters. Mahomes proved that keeping practice fun not only makes the work more enjoyable but also helps set the tone for a new season after a frustrating finish last year.

A preseason formula

The Chiefs shared a three-minute clip full of Mahomes’ energy – t2. For him, having fun isn’t a distraction; it’s part of the process. Andy Reid has long understood that value, even if it sometimes draws criticism. The results speak for themselves: in their 11 seasons under Andy Reid, the Chiefs have ten consecutive playoff seasons and nine consecutive division titles. In addition, the team competed in five Super Bowls, with three wins (LIV, LVII, LVIII) and two losses (LV, LIX).

Mahomes’ philosophy is clear too- preseason is less about results and more about rhythm. With new offensive linemen, a couple of fresh targets at receiver, and key players returning from injury, every rep matters. As he explained, the risks are always there, but the only way to get ready for real football is to play real football.

A step in the right direction

Since the start of August, Mahomes has led by example, showing both veterans and new players how to prepare the Chiefs’ way. Each practice, and even each joke is part of building a culture that blends competitiveness with joy.

For Kansas City, it’s not about reinventing the formula – it’s about staying loose, staying sharp, and letting their quarterback’s unique mix of leadership and humor set the tone for what’s to come.
