Patrick and Brittany Mahomes sat front and center Wednesday night as Luka Doncic made his much-anticipated return to Dallas. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, a known die-hard Mavericks fan, had prime seats for a game that was as emotional as it was electrifying.
Doncic, who was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a stunning mid-season move, returned with fire. Scoring a jaw-dropping 45 points, he led the Lakers to a 112-97 victory over his former team, all while Mahomes looked on, watching a player he deeply admired torch the Mavericks on their own court.
The reunion between Doncic and Mahomes was more than ceremonial. After the game, the two shared a hug, a moment that stirred up feelings about Doncic’s shocking departure back in February. When the news broke, Mahomes reacted online, posting on X: “I’m sick right now.”
A night of nostalgia, heartbreak, and elite basketball
Before tipoff, the Mavericks honored Doncic with a heartfelt tribute video on the jumbotron, which reportedly brought the 25-year-old to tears.
But once the game began, any sentimentality vanished. Doncic exploded for 31 points in the first half alone, later teaming up with LeBron James to seal the win with a dominant fourth-quarter run. James added 27 points to help the Lakers, who are now eyeing the third seed in the Western Conference with only two games remaining in the regular season.
For Mahomes, the night was a painful reminder of what Dallas gave up. The three-time Super Bowl champion has never hidden his Mavs fandom. Last year, he even brought Travis Kelce to a playoff game – though Kelce’s appearance on the jumbotron was met with surprising boos, prompting a dramatic reaction from the tight end.
This time around, there was no such incident. Just Mahomes and Brittany enjoying their offseason, even if the basketball action didn’t go the way he’d hoped.
