In September, the Kansas City Chiefs made headlines when they re-signed Kareem Hunt, the former Pro Bowl running back who had been released by the team in 2018 following a disturbing off-field incident.
The move came after starting back Isiah Pacheco went down with an injury, opening the door for Hunt‘s controversial second stint with the franchise.
The decision reignited public scrutiny. A 2018 video posted by TMZ had shown Hunt kicking a woman during an altercation in a Cleveland hotel hallway.
While Hunt was not arrested, the footage led to his immediate release by the Chiefs at the time and a subsequent eight-game suspension from the NFL.
In the years since, Hunt had spent time with the Cleveland Browns, working his way back into the league.
Now back in Kansas City, the Chiefs are trying to strike a delicate balance, acknowledging Hunt’s past while offering him a second chance.
On the second episode of The Kingdom, a team-produced video series, Patrick Mahomes spoke candidly about Hunt‘s return and the controversy that still surrounds it.
“What he did was wrong, but I know in his heart he isn’t a bad person,” Mahomes said. “It’s how you can become better and learn from them.
“I think that’s something that he embraced. He wasn’t going to let that one bad decision define who he is as a person.”
Chiefs leadership highlights redemption as key to second chance
Mahomes wasn’t alone in his support. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who has long believed in redemption arcs for players, echoed similar sentiments during the same episode of The Kingdom.
“He learned a lesson,” Reid said. “Too many people don’t get a second chance, and then they go back and they start doing bad things. They don’t even have an opportunity to be successful.
“He did wrong. He knew he did wrong. You can’t do that. Somebody’s gotta teach you that you can’t do that. He paid for that.
“We probably all run into roadblocks somewhere. Some more drastic than others. He had to start over and do it the right way.”
