The Kansas City Chiefs are barely alive in the playoff race as they added another loss (10-20) against the Houston Texans on Sunday, and for the first time since 2015 they haven’t won the AFC West.
For nine seasons in a row, the Chiefs dominated the AFC West. The last time they didn’t win it predates Patrick Mahomes, with Alex Smith starting in both 2016 and 2017 and Mahomes serving as the backup in 2017. They lost in the divisional playoffs as a wild card in 2015.
This season, their chances ended with four games still to be played, as the 11-2 Denver Broncos have a five-game lead over Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and company.
Mahomes: “We’re not executing at the right moments”
After the loss, Patrick Mahomes admitted that the 6-7 Chiefs’ playoff hopes are slipping away. “We know the chances are getting lower and lower, but I know the guys on this team are going to give everything they have, eery opportunity we get,” Mahomes said.
With four games remaining in the season, the Chiefs face the Chargers, Titans, Broncos and Raiders, and Mahomes doesn’t hesitate to say Kansas City will be a tough team to beat.
“We’re not winning games, but that mindset the guys have in this locker room, in the games we’re not winning, you can never question the fight of this team,” Mahomes commented.

Finally, he talked about where the Chiefs are failing on the field: “Obviously, we’re not executing at the right moments and we’re not making those plays, but at the end of the day you can never question that, and I think you’ll see that these last four weeks.”
