Pat Mahomes Sr. makes bold bet on Chiefs’ playoff chances

Patrick Mahomes Sr. is putting real skin in the game, publicly wagering that his son will propel the Kansas City Chiefs back into the playoffs.

The elder Mahomes took to social media and declared, “I’ll take any bet that anyone wants to make that we make the playoffs. So just DM and let me know.”

It’s not just bravado from a proud parent: Mahomes Sr. has been in his son’s corner since Day 1.

A former Major League Baseball pitcher, he’s long respected Patrick Mahomes’ decision to forgo a pro baseball path in favor of college football.

He’s spoken repeatedly about his faith in his son’s potential, not out of blind optimism, but from watching Patrick take a massive gamble and win.

A wager born of deep-rooted belief

Mahomes Sr. isn’t just playing fantasy general, his conviction comes from years of understanding what his son is capable of.

In fact, he has publicly reflected on how Patrick first showed elite-level athletic talent on the baseball diamond during his youth.

That long-ago moment still echoes in his confidence today.

His recent bet resonates not only because of the stakes, but because it’s personal. He’s not just backing his son, he’s asserting his faith in the culture Patrick builds with his teammates.

Kansas City’s stretch run is brutal, with a difficult schedule to close out the regular season.

But for Mahomes Sr., it’s not just about wins and losses, it’s about family legacy and trust in what his son brings to the field.

Perspectives beyond the bet

The elder Mahomes has always been more than just Patrick’s dad. He’s been a mentor and a sounding board.

When Patrick was still at Texas Tech, his parents insisted he honor his multi-sport commitments.

In terms of the bet, Patrick‘s dad is framing it as a challenge to fans, a dare for doubters, and a rallying cry for believers.

It’s a public vote of confidence: Patrick isn’t just backed by his dad, but by someone who knows exactly what he’s capable of.

The reality of what the Chiefs face

Despite Mahomes Sr.’s confidence in his son, several media analysts have pointed to structural problems in the Chiefs‘ game plan.

Former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum recently argued that Patrick Mahomes and the coaching staff need to lean more into play-action passing – a strategy the team has underutilized this season.

Mahomes himself acknowledged the issue, admitting in a candid press conference that he’s struggling with deep throws.

“I’m just not making the throws…I’ve just gotta give them a chance to make plays,” he said, referencing overthrows to Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton.

Despite the offensive breakdowns, though, Mahomes has maintained a belief in upward momentum.

“It’s been fun to be here… I think we’re getting better and better,” he told KMBC, pointing to a different energy this year despite the record uncertainties.
