Paige Spiranac stirs fresh debate at The Players: Should golf add a fifth major?

It began with a simple question shared among fans walking the grounds at TPC Sawgrass. Paige Spiranac wanted to know what they really thought about The Players Championship.

During the opening days of the 2026 Players Championship, the former professional golfer and now one of golf’s most recognizable media personalities spent time asking spectators whether the tournament should officially be considered the sport’s fifth major. Later, she shared that the answers caught her off guard.

The reaction suggested that the conversation around The Players may be shifting among fans, even if golf’s official structure has not changed.

For years, the event organized by the PGA Tour has carried a reputation unlike any other tournament outside the traditional majors. Played on the famous Stadium Course at Sawgrass, the championship combines one of the deepest fields in golf with one of the largest prize purses on the tour calendar.

That combination is why many players and analysts have quietly referred to it as golf’s unofficial fifth major.

Why The Players Championship keeps coming up in the major debate

The sport’s four official majors remain unchanged: The Masters, The PGA Championship, The U.S. Open, and The Open Championship. Each is closely tied to a governing body with decades of history behind it.

Still, The Players Championship often feels different from a typical PGA Tour stop.

Year after year, the tournament attracts an elite field that rivals those majors. According to data from the Official World Golf Ranking, the event regularly features one of the strongest collections of top-ranked players anywhere on the schedule.

The course itself also adds to the event’s mystique. The island-green 17th hole at Sawgrass remains one of the most recognizable and pressure-filled shots in professional golf.

And the 2026 edition again looks like a major in everything but name.

Players such as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Hideki Matsuyama headline a field filled with top-tier talent.

Analysts and golf legends continue to push the idea

Support for elevating the tournament has been building in recent years.

Brandel Chamblee, an analyst for Golf Channel, recently argued that by several measurable standards the Sawgrass event already matches or exceeds the qualities often associated with major championships.

Meanwhile, Hall of Fame golfer Lee Trevino has made his opinion clear. Speaking previously on Golf Channel, Trevino described the event’s scale and field strength as evidence that it belongs in the same conversation as golf’s biggest tournaments.

He said “there’s no question in my mind about it” when discussing whether the event should be considered a major.

Among current players, the perspective is sometimes more personal than official.

Billy Horschel, a multiple-time winner on the PGA Tour, told Sky Sports that if the biggest title he captured in his career were The Players Championship, he would still view it as a major-level achievement.

In other words, the prestige of the event already carries that weight for many inside the sport.

Where the conversation goes from here

For now, golf’s structure remains unchanged. The four established majors are deeply rooted in history and tied to organizations such as Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA of America, the USGA, and The R&A.

There has been no formal move to expand that list.

Still, moments like Spiranac’s fan poll show how often the topic resurfaces whenever the tour arrives at Sawgrass.

The Players Championship continues to blur the line between a prestigious tour event and something even larger.

As the 2026 Players Championship unfolds, the debate is once again circulating among fans, analysts, and players. And even without an official vote, the question keeps returning every year at Sawgrass.

Reporting draws on public statements from Paige Spiranac, commentary by Brandel Chamblee on Golf Channel, remarks from Hall of Fame golfer Lee Trevino, and interviews with Billy Horschel reported by Sky Sports. Tournament context and field information reference PGA Tour releases and Official World Golf Ranking data.
