Paige Bueckers sets new Wings scoring record, but Dallas still searching after ninth straight loss

The Dallas Wings are having their worst season ever. With a 9-33 record and only two games left, the team appears destined to be the worst in the WNBA this season, but amid the bleak outlook, the team can take solace in the fact that Paige Bueckers continues to make history.

The 2025 WNBA season was a nightmare for the Wings. Their record is one of the worst in their history, except for the 3-31 they achieved in 2011, when they were still the Tulsa Shock, and the 8-14 record in 2020, in their fifth year in Dallas.

The team showed flashes of talent in every game, and a good portion of their losses were by 10 points or less. Still, head coach Chris Koclanes’ team needs to make a final push. Among the few things the Wings can boast about is Bueckers’ incredible rookie season.

Paige breaks another WNBA record

Thursday’s 84-80 loss to the Golden State Valkyries was just another in a long list of thrilling games the Wings lose in the final minutes. Bueckers’ 27 points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals weren’t enough to give Dallas its tenth win of the season.

However, it was enough to add a new milestone to her resume: most points scored in a single season with the Wings. Bueckers finished the game against the Valkyries with 650 points, surpassing the 630 points Arike Ogunbowale achieved in the 2019 season, the WNBA announced with a post on X (formerly Twitter).

With two games remaining, against the Los Angeles Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury, Bueckers will likely approach or even surpass 700 points this season. That is, unless Koclanes decides it’s not worth risking his star in a season that is lost.

Bueckers is a surefire ROY

Despite Dallas’s season to forget, that hasn’t stopped Bueckers from leading the list of candidates for the 2025 Rookie of the Year award. Her averages of 19.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.6 steals would be more than enough to win her the award this year.

Add to that her leadership on the court, her ability to respond in crucial moments, and her team spirit, and there’s no one better to be the 2025 ROY, hoping the team’s fortunes turn around next year.
