Paige Bueckers opens the race debate again after her and Caitlin Clark’s attention: “There’s white privilege every day that I see”

In a recent interview, WNBA star Paige Bueckers addressed ongoing concerns about racial disparities in media coverage of women’s basketball.

The Dallas Wings‘ No. 1 overall pick emphasized that despite progress, black women athletes continue to receive less media attention than their white counterparts.

Bueckers stated, “There’s white privilege every single day that I see,” acknowledging the advantages she perceives in her own career due to her race.

A call for equal representation

Bueckers‘ comments echo sentiments she expressed during her 2021 ESPY Awards acceptance speech, where she highlighted the lack of media coverage for black women in sports.

She noted that while black athletes often dominate in performance, their visibility in media does not reflect their contributions. Her recent interview with Time Magazine reaffirmed her stance, stating, “It’s still an issue, every single day. There’s not ever equal coverage.”

The disparity in media coverage is particularly evident in the WNBA, a league predominantly composed of black women.

Despite this, players like Bueckers and Caitlin Clark, who are white, often receive more media attention. Bueckers acknowledged this imbalance, saying, “I feel like I’ve worked extremely hard, blessed by God. But I do think there’s more opportunities for me. I feel like even just marketability, people tend to favor white people, white males, white women.”

The impact of media representation

The underrepresentation of black women in sports media has broader implications beyond individual athletes. It affects the visibility of their achievements and the narratives surrounding their careers.

Bueckers‘ advocacy for equal media coverage aims to challenge these systemic issues and promote a more inclusive portrayal of athletes.

Her efforts align with those of other athletes who have used their platforms to address racial inequalities in sports. By speaking out, Bueckers hopes to inspire change and ensure that all athletes receive the recognition they deserve, regardless of their race.
