Paige Bueckers creates the ‘first problem’ for Caitlin Clark as Indiana Fever star searches for top form

The United States women’s national team assembled on Friday for a high-level training camp that brought together some of the brightest talents in the WNBA.

With stars such as Angel Reese, Cameron Brink and Paige Bueckers sharing the floor, the session had no shortage of quality, but one brief sequence during a scrimmage stood out.

Bueckers, fresh off being named the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year, delivered a moment that summed up her confidence.

Facing Caitlin Clark, she forced the Fever guard into the air before stepping aside and knocking down a smooth three from the corner.

The basket drew a strong reaction from teammates and served as an early sign that Clark, still easing back from injury, is not yet at her sharpest.

Clark has been away from competitive action since July following a season disrupted by fitness issues. Even so, she sounded optimistic about her condition after the session, insisting she felt “100%” as she returned to full-team work.

“I think that’s what USA Basketball does,” she said. “Just so many amazing athletes and women coming together for one common goal. I think that’s always brought out the best of each other.

“It’s really fun to be able to share the court and be on the same side for a change.”

Youth and experience combine in USA camp

Eighteen players are involved in the current camp, blending established champions with emerging stars.

Veterans such as Brittney Griner, Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum are working alongside younger names like JuJu Watkins, Rickea Jackson and Angel Reese, creating a competitive but supportive environment.

Bueckers spoke about the value of that mix as preparations continue.

“Obviously, there’s some vets and there’s the older class who have already came in and won gold medals, and they have that experience,” she explained.

“So as a younger group, you want to ask them questions, soak it up, be a sponge. Like, get their experience and then grow in our experience as well.”

Team USA is using the camp as an important step toward next year’s FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany.

The Americans remain the dominant force in the competition, having lifted the trophy 11 times and winning the last four editions.

After narrowly defeating France in the 2024 Olympic final, the target is clear: extend their reign on the world stage once again.
