The Los Angeles Sparks picked up their third win of the season on Friday night, defeating the struggling Dallas Wings 93-79. While the Sparks celebrated a complete performance with all five starters scoring in double figures, the game was also marked by controversy-and a growing concern for Dallas rookie Paige Bueckers.
Still in concussion protocol, Bueckers did not suit up. Her absence was felt once again, with the Wings falling to 1-8 on the year. But even off the court, her name was at the center of the conversation after her teammate DiJonai Carrington‘s questionable play stirred outrage among fans.
Late in the third quarter, Carrington aggressively pulled Sparks guard Sarah Ashlee Barker to the ground by the hair during a scramble. The play resulted in a loose ball foul, and Barker calmly knocked down both free throws to give L.A. a 14-point lead.
Fans raise red flags ahead of future matchups
The moment set social media ablaze. On X, users quickly condemned the move and speculated on future incidents, particularly with Caitlin Clark looming on the Wings‘ upcoming schedule.
“You know she gonna do worst to Clark when Fever and Wings match up,” one user wrote, while another compared Carrington to Draymond Green, known for his physical style and polarizing reputation in the NBA.
Others were less reserved. “She’s such a loser,” one person wrote, while another added, “How is she not tossed for that?”
Carrington still managed to contribute 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists, though her seven turnovers added to a frustrating night. Ashlee Barker, the target of the foul, added a solid 15-minute stint with four points, three rebounds, and a steal.
As for the Sparks, it was their most complete outing of the season. Azura Stevens led the charge with 21 points, six rebounds, and a strong defensive presence, as Los Angeles continued its climb out of the WNBA basement after last year’s 8-32 campaign.
Meanwhile, the Wings are hoping that once Bueckers returns, her talent can help shift momentum. Drafted No. 1 overall after a decorated career at UConn, the young guard remains the face of Dallas’s long-term plan. But if physical play like Carrington‘s becomes the norm, fans worry that Bueckers-and stars like Clark-might be placed at risk.
The league has embraced an influx of young talent. Now, it faces an important question: how will it protect them?
