P.J. Washington signs $90 million extension with Mavericks through 2030

Incredible – the Mavericks and PJ Washington reached an agreement that confirms the franchise’s confidence in the 27-year-old forward. The extension, which takes effect in the 2026-27 season, will allow him to earn an average of $22.5 million per season. Meanwhile, Washington will play the 2025-26 season under the final year of his current contract, valued at $14.1 million.

Since arriving in Dallas during the 2023-24 campaign from the Charlotte Hornets, Washington has established himself as a key piece in the team’s system. His impact was immediate: he brought offensive versatility, defensive solidity, and a crucial balance that helped the Mavericks reach the 2024 NBA Finals, where they fell to the Boston Celtics.

Role in the Mavericks’ rotation

Last season, Washington posted the best numbers of his career: 14.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, along with a solid 45.3% field goal percentage and 38.1% from three-point range. His qualities as a rebounder, multi-level scorer, and versatile defender have made him a reliable player for any lineup.

Even with Luka Doncic’s departure to the Los Angeles Lakers in the trade for Anthony Davis, Washington’s role has not diminished. Today, he is one of the most valuable secondary players in the Western Conference and, alongside No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg, will have more opportunities to shine in “catch and shoot” situations.

Mavericks reinforce their roster

General manager Nico Harrison has made it clear that Dallas is in “win-now” mode. In addition to Washington’s extension, the Mavericks secured Daniel Gafford with a three-year, $60 million contract, signed Kyrie Irving for three years and $118 million, and added D’Angelo Russell on a two-year, $11.6 million deal.

The arrival of Anthony Davis and the presence of Irving and Flagg make the Mavericks a team with serious championship aspirations. Washington fits as the ideal complement – a bridge between superstars and role players who brings stability on both ends of the court.

Washington, key to the present

Although the Mavericks have no intention of moving him at the moment, Washington’s contract – with its moderate and flexible value – keeps open the possibility of being part of a bigger trade in the future. Nevertheless, his importance today is undeniable: he immediately raises Dallas’s title hopes.

With a strengthened core and their sights set on raising a second banner, the Mavericks confirm that PJ Washington will be a fundamental part of the story they aim to write in the NBA over the coming years.
