Since they parted ways, Oscar de la Hoya has not stopped ‘reminding’ Canelo Alvarez that he made him a boxing figure in the United States.
But Saul Alvarez accuses him of stealing money from boxers and agreeing behind their backs to get contracts that were never discussed.
De la Hoya calls Saul Alvarez ungrateful
Amid various back-and-forths from both sides, the Golden Boy insists that for 10 years he promoted Alvarez in the United States and got him the best contract in the sport at the time: $365 million for 11 fights with DAZN in 2019.
In boxing history, when has a fighter stuck with the same promoter? Nobody, for some reason. I promoted Canelo for 10 years, I discovered him and made him what he is in the United States. He already had a record of 40-0 or something like that. So I did it in the United States. 10 full years.
“We don’t love each other anymore? It’s true, we dislike each other, but even so, it should not be forgotten that I promoted him for 10 full years and got him the biggest contract in the history of the sport. They are ungrateful fighters,” he told The Roundtable on DAZN.
Canelo’s contract with DAZN was not fulfilled
Saul Alvarez’s contract with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN only lasted one year and the fighter walked away from 280 million dollars to separate from these partners and continue his career.
Under this historic contract at the time, Alvarez had only three fights and since 2021 he has agreed his fights without Oscar de la Hoya.
