The rivalry between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Oscar de la Hoya is one of the most deep-rooted in boxing, after the mutual resentment following the breakdown of their representation agreement, and at every opportunity they take the opportunity to express their mutual hatred.

The conflict between Canelo and Golden Boy began when the boxer accused the promoter of stealing from him and called him a “scumbag”. This happened when they were working together and he even threatened to take legal action, but they never went to court.

At 34 years of age, Canelo Alvarez has entered the final stage of his career and has just signed with Arab promoter Turki Alalshikh the most lucrative contract of his career, for around $400 million for five fights sponsored by Riyadh Season. The first will be in May against Cuban William Scull and the next is expected to be against Terence Crawford on September 13. However, for Oscar de la Hoya, the opponent that should be a priority for the Mexican is David Benavidez.

In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Oscar de la Hoya took the opportunity to throw a question into the air to question Canelo’s strategy in choosing Scull, and maintaining his refusal to give David Benavidez a chance, in what he considers is the fight that everyone in the boxing world wants to see.

“I keep scratching my head, ‘What are you doing? That’s all I do all night. Canelo, what are you doing? People want to see the big fights. They want to see Benavidez,” said Oscar de la Hoya and he finished with a forceful reflection: “In 10 or 15 years, will we say: ‘Did you avoid Benavidez or did you give us the big fights with Benavidez?'”.
