Former world champion and boxing promoter Oscar de la Hoya put aside his traditional attacks on Saul Canelo Alvarez, and instead preferred to talk about the controversial fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.
In his podcast, ‘The Thursday Clap Back’, De la Hoya spoke about an event that broke all audience records, in which Tyson took home a total of $20 million, compared to $40 for Jake Paul.
However, the fight was far from the spectacular one that everyone expected, with a Tyson seriously affected by his 58 years of age, while Paul “indulged” the boxing legend and only got through the fight without seeking to do any major damage to his opponent.
Despite everything that has been said about the event that took place last Friday at the AT&T Stadium, for the Golden Boy there were two winners that day.
The real winners of the boxing evening in Texas
The pre-main event was a world title fight between two women, Ireland’s Katie Taylor and Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano, who staged a close fight that gave much to talk about for the intensity and quality of both boxers.
“Mike Tyson against Jake Paul was by nature a horrible fight. Now, everyone talks about how organised this fight was. I think it was scripted and I think Tyson was certainly held back,” said Oscar De La Hoya, who said that, from his experience, it was easy for him to distinguish the anomaly.
In contrast to the poor fight between Paul and Tyson, De la Hoya said that Taylor and Serrano were the real winners of the night’s event, as they gave a fight that was decided by decision (in favor of Taylor), and put all the attendees at the Cowboys Stadium on the edge of their seats by the enormous dedication of both fighters.
That fight put the two women in a position where they surely gained many followers, to the point that several users on DAZN, the streaming service on which the event was broadcast, pointed out that, for the quality of the fight between Taylor and Serrano, that fight should have been the main fight of the event.
“I think Kristie Taylor and Amanda Serrano were the real winners of the night, because they did give a real fight, which made everyone look at their careers, and if there is another rematch everyone is going to want to see that fight,” added De la Hoya.
Taylor and Serrano had already fought in 2022 at Madison Square Garden, and like their fight a week ago, the two fighters put on a great show in a fight that ended with much controversy.
The fight between the two on April 15 ended in the same way, wrapped in controversy due to the constant headbutts between the two fighters that caused a huge cut on the eyelid of the Puerto Rican, who after the fight accused Taylor of being a dirty fighter, although she later retracted.
