At this stage, only one scenario exists for Dallas to pull off a move for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and it is one that would require a nearly perfect set of circumstances.
LeBron holds a player option with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 season, giving him some flexibility.
But for Dallas to even get in the conversation, they would have to make major sacrifices. That could mean orchestrating a complex sign-and-trade or clearing significant cap space by offloading current contracts-moves that would likely send key Mavericks players and future assets out the door.
Financial realities make a blockbuster move unlikely
The Mavericks‘ cap sheet is already packed with long-term deals for Luka Doncic and several other core players, not to mention rookie Cooper Flagg. To bring in LeBron‘s hefty salary, Dallas would either have to strip down their supporting cast or find a third team to help absorb contracts. Front office insiders agree that while the Mavericks have pulled off surprises before, this scenario would require unprecedented cooperation from multiple teams and the star himself.
Even if LeBron chose to leave LA, there is little evidence he would put Dallas at the top of his list, unless he sees a clear path to another championship alongside Doncic and Flagg.
For now, the “LeBron to Dallas” dream lives on mostly in fan speculation. The Mavericks are more likely to focus on developing their promising young roster, rather than dismantling it for one last shot at another superstar era.
